CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held last evening. Present—Mr J. Meehan (in the chair), Messrs R. B. Bell, H; Lowry, E. Brady, J. Meehan, AV. G. Irwin, R. B. Halstead, T. It. Mackay, and J. L’eggott (secretary). * The New Zealand Sports Protection Association wrote asking the Chamber to express an opinion on the legislation proposed to effect daylight saving, pointing out that greater efficiency and greater opportunities for healthful recreation would result from the passing of such legislation. Air Irwin said he quite agreed with the proposal. It meant working under better conditions and also permitting time for greater recreation. Owing to the smallness of the meeting it was resolved to hold the letter over .for discussion at next meeting. The Westport Coal Col wrote in regard to demurrage charged by the Railway Department on coal supplied ex ship, claiming that the time allowed for discharging their trucks was not sufficient. They also pointed out that owing to the long intervals elapsing between shipments,' as a result of erratic movements of shipping, congestion at the sidings often resulted. They asked that representation bo made to the Department to have tho standing time extended. Ihc Timaru Gas Co. a'so wrote on the same lines. Mr Halstead said that when shipments arrived with only short notice given it was a very difficult matter to get the coal away quickly. Mr Trwin said that the Gas Co. had to order large quantities, and it was impossible to handle the coal more quickly. It was resolved that the question be placed before tho Department with a request that an extension of time be granted. Eor the Publicity Committee, Mr Bell reported that 1500 copies of the i’histrated booklet of South Canterbury had been distributed at the Exhibition', and 500 copies sent to the publicity agent at Auckland. One thousand copies had also reached _ the secretary, and 70011 copies were in the course of printing. A financial statement would ho presented at the next meeting, when recommendations regarding distribution would also be placed before the Chamber. 'lhc report was adopted. S.
