MUSIC IN NEW ZEALAND.
MADAME CLARA BUTT’S CRITICISM. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright, Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. SYDNEY, March 22. Madame Clara Butt, on her return from New Zealand, said musically New Zealand cannot be compared with Australia'. “It is a sad but cartam fact,” she continued, “music has developed very little in New Zealand for-many years. I cannot offer any reason why this should he so, unless it is that the people are conservative and slow to chnngo their methods, or that they lack the means of training which Australia enjoys in its conservatoriums. The voices are undoubtedly there, but they are not developed, and beauty is lost.”
