THE BLACKSMITH.
AND HIS HOUSE. . QUESTION OF POSSESSION, n* i At last night’s meeting of the Tiniaru Borough Council a' letter was read from Mr R. AVelsh (formerly blacksmith in the employ of J*® Council) asking the latter to defer action in taking possession of the house, which he occupied, until the next sitting of the Supreme Court here in May next.. The Mayor said they could not deal with this matter; it was impossible for the Council to deal with the situation. They had given the' blacksmith one month’s notice to leave the house, in November last. Councillor Hunt inquired if notice of motion could not he given to rescind that resolution? The Mayor said no; the resolution had been acted upon, and the proposal was now quite out of order. Councillor Hunt said lie thought he could give iiotice of motion and that it would be quite in order. He might he wrong, hut it might be the Mayor who was wrong. The Mayor said the motion in question had been carried unanimously; if Councillor Hunt did not agree with it why had he not opposed it at the time? Councillor Hunt said the Mayor had not acted fairly in the matter; if he had put the motion which he had been asked to put, the blacksmith would have been, reinstated and there would then have been no question about putting him out of the house. The Mayor said the matter wai out of order. Councillor Satterthwaite asked what was the position. AVas the resolution phssed last November to be acted upon, or not? ' The Mayor said the matter was in the hands of the Council’s solicitors. Councillor Hawkey said that on a previous occasion when the Council was demanding rates, a resolution was held to be necessary: that being so it was surely necessary now. The Mayor passed on to the next business.
