NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. NALDER EXTENDS ROSE. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, March 19. The Dominion amateur athletic championships opened to-day in good .weather. The attendance was about 4000. Tho ground was in the best of condition, with no sun and practically no wind. The outstanding attraction was Rose; in tho three-mile, but he did not lower his record. The surprise" of tho race was Nalder. The champion seemed unable to shake him off in a splendid finish. One of the best performances of the day was that of Shirley in the high jump. Farrell also excelled himself. Shirley cleared 6ft Ilf in. Tho same athlete- passed the' standard in tho hop, step and jump by more than 2 feet. Cabot .(Timaru) in the three mile' walk, got the only championship for Otago. Morgan and Ka laugher ran a dead heat in the 120 yards hurdles. Results: — Hop, step and jump (nine entries) — J. W. Rose led from the start with long sweeping strides, with Nalder, Stevens and Connell behind, in that order. Nalder and Rose led alternately for the first mile, which was done in smin 3sec, with Rose about two yards ahead of Nalder, and 50 yards in front of Stevens. Nalder took the lead at theseventh lap, but the eighth lap belonged to Rose, with Nalder hanging tenaciously on. Rose gave way to Nalcler again at the end of tho ninth, and be was still in ascendancy at the tenth. Two miles were covered in lOmin 20sec. Rose in the eleventh lap strode ahead again, but Nalder led aff tho finish, and for a. third of the last lap, where Rose pub on more speed and took charge. The crowd expected to see. Nalder left standing when Rose speeded up, but instead of that there was a great finish, and Rose won only by a yard and a Half.
