RIFLE MEETING.
(BUSY DAY AT TRENTHAM, 1
ROOTS WINS AGGREGATE. By Telegraph—Press Association. TRENTHAM, March. 18. To-day saw solid progress 'made with the rifle meeting, the management making the most of the fine weather ’ prevailing. Indeed /Tf 8 unusually fine and uncomfortably warm, and that marksman s bane, the mirage, was painfully evident all day, except when at- rare intervals a slight right breeze came along and drove it off, only to allow it to reappear presently more tantalizingly than ever. Shooting, however, despite the mirage, was very, “hot” throughout, and some fine totals were recorded. Two matches were completed, the Wellington; (ten shots each at 500 and 600 yards), and the Taranaki (ten shots at 800 yards). In addition, one range (600 yards, fifteen shots) of the Dominion Match was fired, and th 9 second leg (ten at 900 yards) will be taken to-morrow morning. To-day’s shooting at 600 yards completes the ranges counting for the Trentham aggregate, which falls to Roots with 432 points. He takes £6, a medal, and the shield. It is notable that Anderson, last year’s Belt winner, who also carried off this match with a total of 414, is only three points behind that tally to-day, and stands thirty-fifth on . the list. Last year 397 got into the , prize money; to-day it took 410 t-o creep; in. - The tie between Wellington Suburbs and Greytown in the Champion Service Teams Match was .decided today.
