It was decided to thank the Department. The Ashburton County Council advised that extensive repairs to the Rfincitata bridge would be commenced on slarrh 24, and until further notice all traffic on the bridge would be stopped between 8 a.m. and noon and between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., Sundays excepted. It was decided to ask that the bridge be kept open until after Easter. A number of letters were received from the Royal East African Automobile Association, relative to variom matters. The Otago Motor Club advised that a car, had been stolen from the Exhibition grounds on slarch 2, and gave particulars of it. A large quantity of correspondence on matters of detail was read and considered. slessrs Orbell and Bridges, and the chairman, were appointed a sub-com-mittee to draw up a design and get prices for transfers to put on the windscreen of cars to indicate the name of the Association to which the car owner belongs. •Mr T. H. Torrens, who has just completed a canvass of South Canterbury , for new members, waited on the executive and explained what ho had done. He had found people thrnughn out the district very sympathetic to--1 wards the Association. Satisfaction with the result of 5Jr Torrens’s work was expressed, and it was decided to" ask him to do further canvassing work in South Canterbury later 'on. 51 r Ritchie suggested that the name of every bridge on main i-oads should be erected on it, and that "thoi name of every town and village should also bo posted up. slr Baxter thought this a waste of money, and poiptqd. out that the more signs the Association erected the bigger the cost of maintenance and replacement. He thought it would be better to “nurse” the roads a little more, rather than add to the signs. The secretary said that the names of the bridges were already posted up, and it was decided to erect signs with the names of the towns anti villages throughout South Canterbury. One hundred and forty-nine now members were' elected, bringing the total membership up to 744. A brief discussion took place concerning the new insurance scheme for cars, and it was decided that any member who desires information may obtain it from the secretary. •On the motion of 51r Orbell, it was decided that a brass plate, with the name of the Association, be erected outside the Association’s office.
