SUBSTANTIAL VICTORIES FOR “ WETS."

By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Auatru-’/an end N.Z. Cable Association (Received May 18, 7.20 p.m.) BRISBANE, May 17. Local option polls were held on Saturday in forty-three areas. In twenty-five areas, extending from Gympie southward, the issue was prohibition. In the remainder, in various parts of the State, the issue was whether new licenses should bo granted. In ail areas except three the “wets" secured a majority, and in thoso three the “dry” majorities were non-effective owing to their not reaching the necessary three-fifths of tim total vote.

Some returns are still incomplete, but the result is not likely to be altered.
