PLOUGHING.
MEETING OF MATCH COMMITTEE. The first meeting of the Tiraaru Ploughing Match Committee for the season was held in Pyne, Gould, Guinnes’s rooms yesterday. Present : Messrs A. Gibsoii (chairman), E. Cartwright (hon. secretary), W. J. Bassett, R. J. Edgar, J. Maze, J. Nichol, Wm. Blackwood, Walter Blackwood, W. King, W. Divan, W. Gray, and C. Mcirnedran. _ The chairman said that they had had a very successful year, and they had a satisfactory credit balance. Ho spoke in highly complimentary terms of the work of the secretary, and extended to the committee his best thanks for the loyal and whole-hearted way in whidh they had supported., him. The election of officers for the ensiling year resulted as follows: —Presiducjt, Mr Walter Blackwood; vice-president. Mr R. J. Edgar; committee, Messrs W. J. Bassett, J. Mazo, J. Niclioi, W. Kihg, W. Gray, u. McPhedran, 1\ Hunter, A. Fraser, W. S. Jones, A. Copland, A. F. Stocker, E. Hide, W. Divan, R. Doak, A. Copland jmir. and M. Maze; hon. secretary, E. Cartwright. The president and Mr W. Divan were suggested as delegates to attend the conference of Ploughing Match Committees, to be held on May 20 at Christchurch, but it was said to be useless to send delegates, as last year the decisions arrived at by the conference were not adhered to. it was also said that uniform dates would be no good without ,a uniform programme. It was decided, after a full discussion, that no delegates be sent, it being stated that what suited North Canterbury did not suit South Canterbury. The date selected for this year’s ploughing match was fixed provisionally ror the last Thursday m July, or tho first Thursday in August. Messrs Divan, Gibson, Edgar, M. Maze, Gray, McPhedran, Nichol, P. Porter, W. King, and the president and secretary were appointed a ground committee. Mr DiVan expressed the liopo that a, paddock would be selected in wluch nand-work could bo done without. At nearly all the ploughing matches hand work was being cut out, and he thought it. should be cut out by all. It was said that there would bo a lot of tractors at this year’s match. Mr Divan said he hoped there would be no dog trials at the m,atcli. If they wanted a side-show thoy could have a display of field roots. Tho next meetuig of the committoe was fixed for Friday, Juno 19.
