HUNTING.

MEET AT FAIRLIE. The South Canterbury Hunt Club held a successful meet at Fairlio on 11th May. Shortly after 11 o’clock the hounds threw off on a paddock of Mr LeCren’s, and soon lifted a hare, which made across the road to Mr Gillingham’s, and then turned and recrossed back on to LeCren’s. Although the scent was lost on crossing tho road, the hounds soon picked it up again, and after giving the field a good run backwards and forwards on either side of tho read, they were rewarded with a kill. Shortly afterwards, the field made for Mr Goodwin’s homestead, where an excellent luncheon was provided by the lady friends of the Club. After luncheon, a paddock of Mr. Goodwin’s proved blank, and the pack were then taken to Mr LeCren’s, where several paddocks were drawn without result. On going on to Mr Gillingham’s a hare was raised, which, on making for the hills, gavo the field the best run of tho day before escaping. The hounds were then taken back into a paddock below Mr LeCren’s homestead, and on putting up a hare they gave the field another fine run before crossing on to Gillingham’s, where puss turned again, and made for LeCren's, but the pack was not to be denied, although scent was catchy, and they eventually wore their quarry down and killed her. Fast going and good jumping was the order of tho day, and only one spill was recorded. The field then made back to Mr. Goodwin’s homestead, where afternoon tea was handed round. Before dispersing, Mr Guiness, on behalf of tho club, thanked all the farmers for the use of their country, and tho ladies for supplying the refreshments, and called foi* cheers for them.
