The Mayor has' requested that to-day bo observed as a close holiday and regarded as a Sunday. The AVaiir.ate Trotting Club forwarded a message of sympathy to the Acting-Prime Minister yesterday. BOROUGH COUNCIL. ■•. The first meeting of the newly-elected Borough Council was.'held on- Tuesday night. Present —The Mayor (Mr G. -Dagh) and Councillors F. Nash, S. Grut, H. Smith, W. A. Nelson, J. Atwill, A. E. Lewis, J. B. Robinson, T. Twomey, and AY. G. Paul. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. ..'.Before proceeding with the business thetMuyP l ' moved tno following resolution:-— 1 1 - “That this Council put on record its sorrow at the death of the Prime Minister, who for more than three decades served in the Legislature ol this, our country, arid who for nearly thirteen years as Prime Minister has, in carrying out the duties of that high office, made for himself an imperishable name in the history of the British Empire in an unforgettable epoch. As a. Council we but echo the heartfelt sentiment of the people of AYaimate, when wo record and convey to the Acting-Prime Minister our high appreciation of our dead statesman, and when, beneath our drooping flag, we 'mourn with his sorrowing Wife and family and colleagues in their sore bereavement.” ELECTION OF COMMITTEES. The * arious committees Avero appointed a-s follows:—‘ Finance. —The Mayor (chairman), Councillors Grut, Paul, Robinson, Smith- and Nash. "Works. —Councillors Grut (chairman), Smith, Twomey, Atwill, „ and Robinson. "Water and Drainage.—Councillors Paul (chairman), Lewis, Atwill, Nash, and Twomey. Reserves. —Councillors Smith (chairman), Robinson, Nelson, and Atwill. General and Lighting.—Councillors Nash (chairman), Nelson, Twomey, and Lewis. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from the Rev. A. H. Fowles inviting the Mayor and Councillors to a civic service in St. Paid’s Methodist Church on Sunday evening next. —Tho invitation was accepted. Tho Mayor of Timaru (Mr G. J. Wallace) wrote asking for the Council’s decision in regard to their contribution (£SO) towards tho cost of tho Canterbury Provincial Court at tlia Dunedin Exhibition. Councillor Paul said the matter was before tho Council previously, but they did not want to commit the incoming Council in anv way. Councillor Nash thought the money would be well spent in advertising the district. He moved that provision he made on tho estimates for the amount. Councillor Smith asked if they would get anything out of it. Tho Mayor said that what the Borough would get out of it was very hard to say. If the motion was carried ho would like to suggest to the Council that tho citizens bo called together to devise tho best means of advertising Wainiate at tho Exhibition. Councillor Atwill: “It seems to me that AYaimato has to pay and Timaru gets all the praise.” The motion was then put and carried, and the Mayor’s suggestion agreed to. The South Canterbury Hospital Board forwarded copies of the treasurer’s statement and estimates for tho ensuing year, ft was stated that Waimate’s levy was slightly less than last year. Mr J. B. Fox wrote drawing the attention of tho Council to the state of a water course on his property. —• Referred to the Water Committee. General accounts amounting to £522 1 3 7d. and Gas Co.’s accounts totalling £23 -fs 9d were passed for F payment. GENERAL. Tho Mayor asked if it was the wish of tho Council that a public holiday, Jn tho nature of a Sunday, be declared oil tho occasion of tho Piimo Minister's funeral on Thursday. The Ministers’ Association had arrangements in hand for a public service in Scddon Square, or if tho weather was unfavourable, in tho Olympia Hall.—Tho Council agreed to tho Mayor’s suggestion. Tho Mavor stated that as lie would be attending a conference of Hospital Boards at Auckland on tho next regular Council night, ho would like to have tho meeting pub forward a week.—Agreed to. On the motion of Councillor Twomey, it was decided to forward a wreath to ho placed on the Prime Minister’s grave. A motion, authorising tho uso of such cars as wero necessary for the chairmen of tho various committees to carry out inspections, was carried. DOMAIN BOARD. Tho Council then sat as a Domain Board. Tho following wei-o elected a Park Committee. —.Messrs Paul, Dash, Lewis, Twomey, and Nelson. Tho Curator's request for a grubber and labels was acceded to.

Allingtoii; paintings, Mr H. Slee;. fancy work, Mesdaines J. and L. Betten; superintendent of show, Mr T. Wilce; judges’ stewards, poultry, Messrs W. J. Jones, Wright, Wilce and Wilson; farm produce, Mr E. Pollock;. garden prodi’ce, Air T. Wilce; cooking, Air G. Duncan; fruit, Air AY. Chamberlain. Arrangements for the opening of the show were left to the president. RACING CLUB. The committee of the Waimate Racing uluo met yesterday afternoon. Present —Alcssra J. Aiatnieson fcnairman), E. te. Mills, PL. AViilotts, J. ucucfi, A. Aicpnerson, T. Twomey, Al. .Leonard, and it. Si. Harrison. A motion of sympathy was passed With tho relatives of tiio. late Premier. The. secretary .reported that he . had written to tno Canterbury District Committee claiming the Thursday nearest St. Patrick's Day as the date for tho next race meeting. He had also notified tho Trotting Association and tho New Brighton Trotting Club to tno same effect. Tho Waimato Trotting Club and the AYaimate District Hunt applied for the uso of the racecourse tor their respective meetings. —Granted. The Under-Sccreiary, Department of Internal Affairs, replying to a letter from tho Club requesting a totalisator permit for an extra dnyls racing, statpd that several clubs had been unable to utilise the one day permits, allotted to them, and that their permits had been given to clubs that were, in serious financial difficulties. Should any further licenses become available tho claims of the club would not be overlooked, ■ Air C. J. Nimmo’s resignation was accepted with regret. , DEPUTATION. A deputation from the AYaimate, District Hunt waited on the Committee in regard to the Dates Committee’s suggestion that both clubs , .should amalgamate.. Tho question was discussed at\somc. length, and it was decided to ahialga-. mate with tile Hunt Club provided the conditions wero acceptable. A subcommittee was set up to go fully into tho matter with the Hunt Club.

Accounts ■•-amounting to £47 :7s 5d were passed for payment.
