GERMANY'S NEW PRESIDENT.

Triumphal Entry Into

Berlin.

VON HINDENBURG’S PLEASING

EXPERIENCE.

By Cable—Preas Association—Copyright.

Auatralian and N.Z, Cable Aaaociatloa (Received May 12, 9.10 p.m.) BERLIN, May 11.

Marshal von limdenburg, prior to his departure from Hanover, for Berlin, to assume the presidency, addressed a large gathering, when he earnestly pleaded for unity. He would bear in mind the poor and distressed, and try to act as peacemaker. Von Hindenburg was given an enthusiastic send-off, and received a triumphal welcome upon his formal entry into Berlin. When the train readied the gaiiy-beflowered suburban station of Heerstrasse, nine aeroplanes were hovering overhead, dropmg flowers. The President, who was wearing «. top-hat and frock coat, was welcomed by Dr. Luther (Chancellor), the chief Burgomaster of Berlin and other notables, with whom he shook hands silently. After the presentation of a bouquet by Dr. Luther’s young daughter, von Hindenburg left on the five mile route to the Chancellor’s Palace, the road throughout being lined with cheering crowds, whose salutations von Hindenburg acknowledged. Nationalist organisations, were most prominent, as the Republicans adhered to their; earlier boycott decision. Throughout the drive, von Hindenburg exhibited the air of an old man, well pleased with the cordiality of his reception. At the conclusion of the drive, the crowds dispersed quietly, the Monarchists marching off, singing patriotic songs. The President takes the oath tomorrow.
