STOREKEEPER’S DEADLY

A Glasgow storekeeper spent an anxious night, owing to the fact that he sold a butcher a pound of salts of sorrel for preserving meat, instead of saltpetre.
When the shopkeeper discovered his error and that he had sold deadly poison, he ran to the butcher’s shop, but found it closed. He returned at dawn, awaited the opening, and was relieved to find none of the poisoned meat had been sold, though it had been laid out on the counter in readiness.
