ACCIDENT AT THE HAURAKI
SAW MILL. A serious accident occurred at the Hauraki saw mill, Thames river, yesterday, at about 11 o'clock, to one of the employees named Henry George Newland. It appears that at the time the accident occurred Newland was working at the circular saw, cutting some 4 by 3 scant, lings. Tho scantlings began to jump about on the table, and Newland placed his right hand down on them to keep them steady. His attention must have been taken up with this, for his hand with the limber was drawn in under the teeth of the revolving saw, and his thumb and three fingers were instantly sawn off close to the palm of the hand. The little finger only was left, and this was cut near the top, but not to any extent. The poor fellow, with the assistance of his mates, had his band bound up and tied up to his shoulder. There was no boat fit to come down the river, so his mates rowed him in a small boat across to the lower mill. Here two horses were procured, and with a mate leading his horse he was brought to the hospital shortly after 2 o'clock. The wound is a most painful one, and the injury is irreparable. The house surgeon was in immediate attendance, and dressed the wound as carefully as possible, in order to alleviate the pain and heal the wound. It is not suspected that the injuries are of such a character as to necessitate further amputation.
