VOLUNTEER PRIZE FIRING.

The new Snider rifle presented to the Jiangers bj Mr Vy Armstrong, was on" for the first time, at the new rills rnnge, It is the desire of the donor that there should be three competitions for the prize, and the competitor who makes the greatest number of points in the three matches is to be the winner. These competitions are to take place monthly, and in addition for each day's firing there will be a number of money and other prizes. The rules for the competition for the gold medal presented to the company have not yet been adopted. Notwithstanding the dampness of -aturday morning a fair number of aspirants appeared on the ground. The shooting of some of the cracks was not quite up to the mark, but considering that this corps lias had no' practice since the closiug of the old Tararu and Parawai ranges, some allowance may be made. The ranges were 200, 500, and 600 yards, 5 shots at each. We append the names of the winners of prizes and their scores: -

'28 leg of mutton The members of the No, 2 Company also competed at the; same ranges for a Snider rifle, presented for competition by Captain Hazard. Notwithstanding that the firing was carried out under great difficulties, the target being frequently obscured by mists and rain, some good scoring was made, and the prize was won by Vol. Paul, with a splendid score of 48 points.

The Thames Scottish also competed for the medal presented by Captain Murray, and for a suit of clothes. There is a protest entered in regard to the scores, which will come under the company's consideration on Thursday night. It has been decided not to make tho scores public until the point in dispute is settled.
