TAPU CREEK,—THE COALFIELD.

October 31. _ -ihis atternoon Mr Meek took away his boat from Tapu, going to Waikawau to get six bags of coal taken up to (Jrabamstown Mr Kelly having packed the coal for him on mules, as the road to Waikawau is the only one available at present. Mr Meelc states that there are at least four different seoms of coal,'varying in thickness from 2to 10 f ee t each It can be traced from the Tapu Creek down to tho Manaia, a distauce of about 10 miles. Moreover, there are evidently other scams of coal both above and below those secured by Meek and party, for one was found about 8 miles up the creek, and another about 2 miles; while Meek represents the sphere of his operations as being about 34 miles up from the beach, [n all probability, Tapu Creek will be the most convenient route for the tramway. I am glad to learn that Mr McLaren has arranged for shortening the bridletrack between Hastings and the Waiomo. Instead of going over ; the hills at the Hastings Creek, parties will be able to keep pretty close to the beach, thus materially relieving as well as shortening tho journey.
