MINING MATTERS.
Cube.—A section of the junctioned reef was broken down yesterday and a little gold was visible at the hanging-wall side, not in the main body of the lode, but in stringers striking with it. The junction has caused a very material change in the underlie of the reef which is now much more vertical than it lus boeu, but there are a larger number of leaders and stringers coming in from the foot-wall which strike into the lode higher up, so that the absolute width of the junctioned reef is not yet ascertained. It is at present nearly three feet and is likely to still further increase. The stone coming from large blocks thickly imbedded with minerals. There were about seven tons of it taken out yesterday, A crushing for the company will be commenced to-day with 6 head of stampers at the Tramway battery. Tliero are about 35 tons on hand, the larger portion of which was taken out of the black lode before the junction was reached in tho stopes.
Eose and Shameook Teibute.—A retortiug for the tributers of the Hose and Shamrock mine took place yesterday at the iJallarat and Olunes 'battery, The result was 102ozs of gold, which was melted at the Bank of New Zealand into a bar weighing lOOozs odwts. The exact quantity crushed has not been ascertained, but tho average is about the same as recent crushings, ranging from 15dwts to au ounce per ton.
Alburnia.—Some good rich stone was met with yesterday in the rise from theWhau adit-level to meet the winze which was suuk some time ago from the Rose and Shamrock level. The reef has greatly improved, and this is the first find of consequence which has occurred since the rise was started. The manager is of opinion that tbey are only now coming on the shot of gold, and that the block will prove valuable when opened up. Jn other parts of the mine there is no change to report, lietorting for the company will take place to-morrow.
Ijipebiaii City.—Tho men commenced yesterday afternoon to break down the section of the reef which they have been stripping for tho last few days, and at once came on good stone. From amongst the stuff broken down from 40 to 501bs of fair specimens were selected, aud there is gold still in sight in the portion which is to be broken down to-day. The reef is improving in size and general appearance, and is in all respects a very fine looking reef, which from its prospects should pay very handsomely. CnoWiY Piunoe.—Tho now leader to which ■ wo alluded a few days ago has been driven on for a.length of 18 feet, and yesterday afternoon somo of the quartz from it was broken down. It snowed gold freely, and a few pounds of good specimens were obtained from it. The lode ia small, only G inches thiclc, but as it 'is in splendid working country, it will pay well for stoping if, it continues a 9 rich as its present appearance indicates. Ihc drive on the course of the 1 reef has now reached to within 16 feet of the Exchange boundary, and as the drive from tho latter company's mino to meet it is now within about 40 feet of tho boundary, it will not take long to effect communication, Tho advantage to both companies, but particularly to the Kxchange will be very great, securing, as it will, adequate ventilation, We may add that tho .Kxchange. Company have obtained permission to oontinue tlio drive on the reef from the Crown. Prince workings, wliece it reaches tho boundary,
so as to expedite matters as speedily as possible. Within the last few days good gold Las been showing in the reef in tho Crown Prince mine.
Morning Stae Tkibute,—A crushing of 20 tons was completed yesterday for Brown and party, tributers of the Morning Star mine, but tho yield was a very moderate one, only amounting to lOozs lOdwts gold.
Dauntless and Sink-to-Eisb.—Tho crushing for Sawyer and party, tributers of the Dauntless and Sink-to-Eise mine, was completed last evening at the Prince Alfred battery, but retorting will not take place until this morning. With the specimens, the stuff is estimated to yield an average of 4ozs to the ton, and there have been about 25 tons crushed.
Point Eussell. — A crushing for Teasdale and party, tributers of the Point Eussell mine, was also completed last evening at the Prince Alfred Battery, but there will be no retorting until to-day. About 40 tons have been reduced, and the yield will probably average rather better than an ounce to the ton.
Golden Ceown.—ln this mine tho drive in the footwall of the Manukau reef, at tho 170-feet level, has reached the line of tlie No. 2 winze of the Manukau mine, but tho mauager will continue it a further distance of 18 feet before breaking into the lode. Tho object is to reaeh the strike of the shot of gold carried for some distance down in that winze, which dipped diagonally across ,it in a southerly direction.
