The new Burgess Roll for 1873-4 was laid on * the table of the City Council yesserday by the Town Clerk (a copy of which we have re- : ceived). The number of names now on the roll is 1,216, agreat nuinbsr of persons having been disqualified for nonpayment of their, rates before the 30th of June.—Gross. The members of the Dnnedin Fire Brigade met at the station-house on Saturday evening, for the purpose of presenting Nlr John Hughes, who has been appointed Superintendent of the Auckland Fire Brigade, with a testimonial and silver o ill. Captiiu Wain was in the chair, there were a large number present. 1 The call was gold-mounted, and bore an inscription,— The Chairman, in inaking the : presentation, spoke in high terms of the services rendered to theDuuedin Fire brigade by Mr Hughes, and' on behalf of the brigale wished him success in his new sphere.—Mr Hughes, in reply, said the fact of oue of their number' biing up* 1 pointed to the position .of-Superintendent,of the Auckland Brigade spoke volumes t>r. the f efficiency of ths Dunedin Brigade ai there haa., been ten applications for the Qmrdim.
