SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS.

Wellington, Friday.
Duriug the quarter ended December 31st' last, 182,596 telegrams were forwarded, being 45,081 more than in the corresponding quarter of 1872. Tho revenue was £11,147, or £1,385 more than was received for the last three months of, tho previous year.-It is stated that Mr Lemon, Superintendent of the Telegraph, is perfecting a system of his own for sending two messages at a time upon one wire. Tho experiment has been successfully tried between Wellington and Napier.—Messrs Steele and leogh have commenced, an action for damages for libel against the Evening Iribum. Napieb, Friday. The telegraph extension to Poverty Bay was opened as far as the Wairoa to-day. His Honor the Superintendent exchanged congratulatory messages with the Resident Magistrate at Wairoa.—The s.s. 'Pretty Jane' sails to-night for Poverty Bay and Auckland with 32 head of cattle and 200 sheep for Auckland. Dunedin, Friday. The applications under the nominated system of immigration have been forwarded by the immigration office by the mail amounted to 243 souls.
