The startling intelligence was received on Friday evening last that six of the principal Communist prisoners' had escaped from New Caledonia, and had landed at Newcastle.,, Their namos are—Henri Rochefort, Paschal Qrousset, ex-Minister for. Foreign Affurß; : M. Jourde, late Minister for Finance; 01H-* vier Pain, ex-Secretary for Foreign Affairs; M. Balliere, ex-Aid-de-camp to General Kossell; and C Dhillier,- exCommandant of the National Guard; all of whom occupied their several positions under: the Government :of the Com'flune. Tliey have arrived at Sydney, but hoiv they contrived to escape, and all other pirticulars at present remains a mystery. They are reserved, and give no. information, for fear of implicating their friends who aided the,escape. A'o doubt the whole affair was well planned, ai on British soil they are safe, as political refugees. The elections for the first batch of 24 members, resulted in a majority against the Government on the constitutional question. Four new members were returned, and four others who were previously in the House. The others were re-elected.
Judge Williams has sent'in his resignation. He claims a pension of £1,500, a-year, being half his salary. It is believed that Attorney-General Stephen will be elevated to the Bench, but it is doubtful, as his retirement at the present time would complicate the Ministry.
