WHITE CLIFFS SPORTS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The White Cliffs seaside picnic and sports held on Easter Monday at the Wai-iti beach were voted by tho many visitors who were present to bo the outing of the season. This beach is an ideal place for'a day’s outing, and had it not been that such short notice had been given to the public tho attendancewould have been very much larger. As it was, there wore about three hundred present. Tho district was fortunate in getting a 1 real live committee, namely, .Messrs. Itov/o Bros., W- J. Erecth, J. W. Parsons, A. It. Davis, J. Skimjcr, A. Sorrenson, and A. H. Grover, hon. secretary. Tho committee, I understand, intends making the picnic and-sports, an annual affair, but on a much larger scale, as they came out with a substantial credit balance after paying such liberal prize money. Owing to the number of competitors for the different events tho committee had to cut their programme much shorter than they intended. Much interest centred in the ladies’ events,,also tho tilting and comic part- of tho programme. Following are tho resultslooyds handicap, G. Old; high jump, 11. Willieon; ladies’ naildriving competition, Mrs. Parsons; boj’s’ race, Willie Pigott; beau-guessing, Mrs. Cartwright; pillow-fight, men, Pukiri; boys’ pillow-fight, M. Waterson; ladies’ sawing, Miss Mason; cockfight,,Potiti. Tho two tilting events rvoro - very interesting to watch, there being a smart lot of horsemen well up to the game; these two events were won by T. Fisher ami Potiti. It was very noticeable at the gathering how the settlers’ wives gathered the visitors to their tables set side by side on tho green.
