DESPERATE ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE.

A sailor named Leonard Daldry attempted to commit suicide yesterday. It appears that the man had been for some time a sailor on board the ship Thames, from which vessel he was discharged ou the 15th instant. Since then he has been living in the Shakespeare Hotel, Wynd-hain-street. Yesterday morning, about half-past nine o’clock, Mr Clarke, the landlord, found him hanging by the neck from a cravat fastened to the banister. He was bleeding at the mouth and nose, and struggling a little, and he was insensible. Mr Clark at once cut him down, and sent word to the police authorities. Detective Jeffery was shortly in attendance, and made inquiries into the circumstances. Dr Lee having been sent for, on arrival he examined the patient, and recommended his removal to the hospital. Daldry was in convulsive fits when the detective arrived. The recommendation of Dr Lee was carried out, and during the conveyance of the man to the hospital the fits continued. We have not been able to learu anything respecting him as to whether lie is married or not, but his certificates of discharge from several vessels state that he was born at Ipswich in 1831, thus making him about 41 years of age. He ranks as an A. 8., aud hopes are entertained as to his ultimate recovery. — Cross.
