INCREASED TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION WITH AUCKLAND.

Yesterday afternoon Mr Floyd arrived at the Thames from Wellington for the purpose of at once proceeding with the erection of the third wire betweeu the Thames and Mefcer. The material for the work arrived in Auckland on Wednesday’, and the portion for this end arrived here yesterday morning by the Enterprise. The portion for the other end is now being sent up to Mercer for the instaut commencement of the work. By Monday morning a start will be made, and if the weather holds anything like good the wire will be up in perhaps less than -four weeks from the present time. The length of wire to be suspended is 55 miles, and part of the line is very bad for working on at this season of the year, ruuuing as it does through several ugly swamps. It seems that the erection of this third wire was under contemplation at the time the request was sent from here to tho Telegraph Manager, and but for the great scarcity of insulators, would have been commenced ere this. As it is, the department have only’enough of them to complete the work now in hand. Large shipments are, however, ou the way out from England, the delay having been caused, it seems, through the strikes which have taken place at home on the part of the boltmakers. We understand that the Government intend now erecting several lines in this Province, the contract for the line to Kaipara having been already signed, and the work will shortly commenced.
