GOLD MINING IN NEW SOUTH WALES.

(From the Sydney Morning Herald.') Another immense yield of gold from quartz obtained from Krohman’s celebrated mine at Hill End, has to be chronicled as one of the events of the month. The stone weighed 15£ tons, and the amount of gold extracted from it weighed in the gross 6,733 ounces. 803 ounces were obtained from 160 tons of poor stuff. A crushing of 333 tons of stone from Brown’s claim, in the same district, yielded an average of loz 7dwts 2grs to the ton ; and this is spoken of as being an indifferent yield. Gold lias at last been struck at the Shakespeare mine, after working operations had been carried on for three years. A vein nine or ten inches wide has been cut, estimated to yield five or six ounces to the ton. Rawsthorne Company are again raising stone : 306 tons stone from this claim, crushed lately, yielded 1,4140 z 3dwt, or about 4£oz to the ton. Messrs Carroll and Beard have just crushed 10 tons, which yielded 4‘290z. On Tuesday last, another mass of gold was shot out of Beyers and Holterman’s claim. There were 95 pieces, the greater part of which is said to be gold. The sinking and prospecting operations at other claims in the same district are progressing, aud at many of the mines, if we may judge from the reports of the mining managers, there are unmistakable indications that large yields of the precious metal will be obtained before long. At Chamber’s Creek, the shaft at the General Grant reef is down 120 feet; at the bottom the reef has been found with gold thoroughly disseminated through the quartz ; the proprietors have 150 tons of stone to grass, which is expected to yield from Boz to lOoz to the ton. And at the adjoining claim (the Bismarck) stone is being obtained which is expected to yield from 4oz to soz to the ton. In the Forbes district, several leases and claims have been taken up. The other day a rush took place to a spot near the Madman’s lead, where, at a depth of about forty feet, Goz of gold were obtained from a small piece of quartz. The Chief Commissionerfor the Southern Goldfields reports that during the year 1871 nearly all the goldfields in the south produced a yield in excess of that of the previous year, in proDortion to the number of miners employed. The goldfields at and around Grenfell have continued to hold the premier place as regards productiveness in the Western district. Some of the reefs continue to produce unfailing quantities of rich stone. During the year 27,404 tons of quartz were crushed, which yielded 19,5120 z of gold, being an average of 14dwts to the ton. The importance and prospects of the Adelong goldfields have much improved of late, and are at present attracting much attention. The quartz reefs at Lower Adelong are producing richer stone than for some years past, and several new and valuable veins have been struck. The creek claims have also assumed more importance, and have revealed the existence of valuable deposits which had in a most unaccountable manner remained so long undisturbed. A reef has been discovered at Cunningham Creek, about 30 miles from Young, aud beyond the boundary of the Burrangong Goldfields, which promises to be of unusual extdit aud richness. The goldfields at Nerrimunga, Gulf Creek, Delegate, Kiandra, and Tumbarumba continue to afford profitable employment to those engaged in mining. At Ournie, some 25 miles south of Tumbarumba, and beyond the limits of that goldfield, a very promising quartz reef has been discovered, which, from present appearances, bids fair to be rich and extensive. The excitement continues at fever heat in regard to the auriferous quartz discovered at Nanama, in the Yass district, and already three reefs have been named —the Cosmopolitan, the Humbug, aud the Enterprise. About three miles of ground have been pegged out into claims or leases, and quite a crowd of anxious gold hunters are in the locality. Gold has been found in the surface stone in several localities, and the place promises to prove rich in the precious metal. For many years past gold has been washed in small quantities by the surrounding settlers and others from the alluvial and Loin the bed of the Nanama Creek, and it has even been asserted that at least one diamond has been procured in the neighbourhood. All the hands employed ou the Nanama station have left their service and taken up claims.

The total quantity of gold received per escort at the Sydney Branch Mint for the past month was 27,105 ounces. The aggregate receipts for the first seven months of the current year amount to 203,6480 z, against 143,3910 z, for the same portion of 1871, and 92,0990 z for that of 1870.
