The Committee estimated the damage at £2O, and recommended that £l2 should be paid, and 25 per cent of this had been paid. Since then a further claim had been made, and he thought it a case for special consideration. Mr Youno here read the following report of the Sub-Committee : “ The Sub-Committee appointed by the General Committee to carry out the arrangements for the amateur benefit in aid of the Shortland Fire Relief Fund have to report as follows :—That your committee took all necessary steps to make the benefit given by the Garrick Club in aid of the funds a complete success, but unfortunately the inclemency of the weather prevented a large attendance at the theatre, and in consequence the benefit, in a monetary way, was not so successful as your committee anticipated. The expenses attending such performances are, as a rule exceedingly heavy, and after deducted, will leave very little money in the hands of the Committee. Subjoined is a statement of the receipts and expenditure in connection with the performance. Expenditure:— By stage expenses, £2 10s; Mr Joyce, 15s ; bill-sticker, 12s ; Guardian,, £3 11s; Advertise r, £2 3s; Star , £4 9s ; bellman, 5s ; total, £l4 ss. Balance in hand, £6 14s 7d.” The report was adopted, and a vote of thanks passed to the Garrick Club and Sub-Committee for their services. Mr Young returned thanks. The Chairman said there were some lists still out, and there was the sum of £35 or thereabouts which it was understood that Mr Sheehan was to have sent from Wellington, but it had not arrived, and the Coromandel subscriptions had yet to come.
It was left to the Secretary to take steps to get in outstanding lists (in all amounting to some 75 in number), to send a telegram to Mr Sheehan at Wellington, and that he be authorised to incur all necessary expenses. Treasurer stated that the balance of funds in hand amount to £B4 10s. A vote of thanks to the Chairman had been put and past.
