HOKITIKA. Friday. The County Council has voted £SOO for the discovery of a quartz reef near Hokitika, of which reef 100 tons of stone must produce not less than lOOoz of gold. Todd has sold Cassius’ mining plant at Ross to the Drainage Company for £1,650. GREYMOUTH. Friday. The correct return of the first crushing from the Golden Fleece claim at Reefton is 8790 z of gold from 342 tons of stone. Great indignation is felt against the Nelson Provincial Government for opposing the movement to alter the form of government for the South-West Nelson Goldfield. It is rumoured that the Nelson Government are employing canvassers to collect signatures against the movement, and paying one shilling for each sigature. DUNEDIN. The Sir Walter Scott anniversary celebration last night was a great success, as far as numbers are concerned. But great disappointment was felt, because of the absence of Anthony Trol lope, who ha . promised to be present and speak, but who failed to put in an appearance, as he had left by the coach for Christchurch, in the morning. Some speculation has taken place in the Garrick Range mining shares. A new coalfield, said to be of great extent and good quality, lias been discovered between Gatlin’s River and Brathe’s Point. CHRISTCHURCH. . . Friday. A great fire took place in Cashelstreet, this morning, destroying two houses. The loss sustained wa« £7()0. The houses were insured for £4OO in the Northern and New Zealan 1 offices.
