MINING.

Cure. —Yesterday afternoon a shot was put in on the golden vein, which dislodged a quantity of stone. About 4ewt of picked stuff was bagged and brought up altogether, amongst which were several very rich specimens, and the whole showed gold. One stone in particular deserves notice. It weighed very nearly, if not quite, 1501 b, and was very rich indeed, containing a tine band of gold round the sides of it, and there is little doubt that when broken up it will prove to be very rich inside. There was a good show of gold left in the face after this stuff was taken out. The line of goldeu stone was extending yesterday, the precious metal being visible fully 12 feet away from the first point where it was found, and, if they were only to go in and knock down all the vein which is now ready for operating on, the course of the run of gold—if run it lie —would be better determined than can be done at preseut. Shares rose a little yesterday again, as will be seen by our sharemarket report, but were not so firm towards evening, present rates being considered high, and by many risky.

Central Italy.—ln this mine they are about to open out from the chamber in the 325 feet level, and drive to the southwest in order to ocen out on the reef at this depth in anticipation of meeting with the Golden Calf run of gold. The distance from the shaft to the slide at this

level is about 115 feet, and the difference in level between the Central drive and the Golden Calf will be about 70 feet, so that the prospects of getting the run of gold are most encouraging. The drive will be put in in the same direction as that on the reef at the 260 feet level, and will intersect the slide somewhere about where the lode is expected on the far side of it. The other works in the mine are all progressing favourably, no change having been met with lately.

Bank of New Zealand.— The prospects of the trihuters of this company are very good at present. They are getting out soo-e very good stone, and the lode is fully 14 or 15 inches thick. Sons of Freedom. —Good golden stone continues to be taken from the wi'iae going down on the reef, which is still a good size in the bottom, about 24 feet looking well all over. The upper levels too continue good, and from the present prospects, as they get deeper, the future of the mine must be considered very bright. Kuranui. The 2owt of specimens which were obtained since the last crushing were crushed yesterday, at the singlestamp battery, and gave a heavy return of amalgam, proving them to have been excellent stone. A very good return may be expected on Saturday next. Inverness. —This company has started to crush at the Kuranui Battery with ten head of stampers, and the stone is shaping better, there being a very good show on the plates. Some more very good stone was broken out of the upper stupes again on Tuesday night and yeslerda3', and there seems every prospect of a good crushing.

Windsor Castle. —A great improvement lias taken place in the appearance of the lode where it is being driven on at the intermediate level towards the White Rose claim. On Tuesday night a parcel of very nice specimens was taken out, some of which were very rich stones. Crushing is kept up with good prospects of a payable return Don Pedro. — Some very good golden stone has been broken down from the lode above the tunnel level, and close to the slide which lias broken the reef. Judging by the quantity of gold that lias been seen from time as they break down, the paddock of stone which is on band may be expected to crush very well. We understand that it is to lie crushed as soon as the Imperial Crown Battery is ready, and there will be probably, in all, about 100 tone, to put through by that time. Golden Calf. —On Tuesday night a parcel of specimens were taken cut of the reef of very good quality. Tlieie was about half a candle tiox full altogether, and the prospects to be seen in the lode yesterday were very good. Long Drive. —We understand that the manager lias received instructions from his Board of Directors to set to work without dela3 r to carry out the arrangements which we reported a short time since as having been made for the working of this mine in conjunction witli the Imperial Crown Batteiy. For this purpose he is about to start and open up the ground properly from the present beach tunnel level, so that he can pass large quantities of dirt down from the surface to he sent to the mill to treat. We shall he anxious to see tiie result of the experiment about to be made, as, if it turn out a successful one, it will be of immense importance to some of the mines on the Kuranui Spur. Some short time must necessaril3' elapse before toe required opening up work for the proper conducting of the operations can be done, but no time is to be lost in the matter.
