WAIOTAHI HIGHWAY DISTRICT BOARD.

The usual weekly meeting of the Waio, talii Highway Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs Anthony (iu the chair,) R. Graham, Hazard, and Gudgeon. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Kerosene Licenses. —A kerosene license was granted to Mr Patterson, Beach Hoad. Mr Hazard said he had inspected the premises aud fouud them suitable. Urinals. —The Engiueer produced a plan of the proposed urinals in Albertstreet, near the wharf, and Williamsonstreet, near the Theatre Royal. (Mr Gra-

ham here took the chair at the request of Mr Anthony.) The following tenders for the erection of three urinals : T. Constable, £22 ;E. G. Quarter man, £24 10s. It was resolved to accept Mr Constable’s t*nder. Stable. —It was resolved that the question of erecting a stable on the engine house allotment should stand over for the present. Works in Upper Albert - street.— The following tender was read : R. Martin, £lO 5s per chain. It was resolved to accept Mr Martin's tender, conditionally upon arrangements being made with Meunie & Dey as to the road near their premises, and the £3O subscribed by the inhabitants being in hand or substantially guaranteed. Beach Road Footpath. —lbe following tenders for making footpaths from Naval Brigade Hall to Ivaraka footbridge along the beach : R. N. Smith, £27 15s; Barron and Pearson, £26.—lt was agreed to accept Messrs Barron and Pearson’s tender, on condition that the inhabitants subscribe £l3, and that all obstructions in the vicinity of Holdship’s timber yard are removed. Pollen-street. —The following tenders were read for formation of footpath from Albert-street to Cociirane-etrcet, on the west side of Pollen-street: J. Gniney, £l4 88; J. McConochie, £l4 10s. —No deposit accompanied the former tender, and the latter was consequently accepted. Williamson-strekt. The following tenders were read for the construction of

footpath from Barty’s to Renshaw’s, in Williamßon-street : J McConochie, £7 10 ; J. Gurney, £6 10s.—No deposit accompanied the latter tender. It was, however, resolved to accept it, conditionally on the deposit of £2 being forthwith paid. Broken Metal, —An account due to Mr Connor of £6 Gs was ordered to he paid, being at the rate of 4s 6 1 p-r yard. —Mr Gudgeon said he thought the plan of calling for tenders for the whole of the road repairs at per chain would be a good plan. Abraham-STREET. —The Engineer was authorised to construct a crossing in Abraham-street, near Conroy and Foss’, on condition that £3 was subscribed. Scraping and Removing Mud from THE Street. —The following tenders were read for the above work in Golden Crown, Burke, Owen, Williamson, Abraham, Brown, Albert, and Pollen Streets :—J. McConochie, £32 per month ; J. McCulloch, £36. Mr McConochie’s tender was accepted. Mr Graham here left the chair, and Mr Anthony took his place. Metalling. —lt was resolved to place some metal immediately in Golden Crown and Bourke streets. Goldfields Revenue. —A letter was read from Mr Hunter Murray at Wellington, acknowledging the receipt of a circular dated 26th July, requesting assistance towards localising a portion of the goldfields revenue, and stating that he should be glad to do all he could to give effect to the wishes of the Board in the matter.

Kirkwood - strfet. The Engineer stated that to make footpaths on each side of Kirkwood-street would cost about £32.—The Secretary stated that Mr Graham would contribute £lO. It was resolved that the work should be done if £l6 was subscribed. (Subsequently Mr Graham put his name down for £10.) Bella-street Tramway. —The Secretary stated that the BoJIa-street Tramway Company declined to pay £3B demanded of them by the Board for extra work. It was resolved to bold a special meeting on the return of Mr Davies, the chairman, now absent in Auckland. Culverts, &c. —The Engineer was instructed to put a culveit across Owenstreet, and make wooden water-tables down Burke-slreet to the Waiotnlii Creek. The best mode of clearing out this creek was considered. It was agreed that the Board should visit the locality. Street Encroachments. —The Secretary stated that several persons had their residences on the streets near Smiling Valley, viz:—James Parry in Broadstreet, W. Werner Shon-street, W. Patterson, Princes-straet, West, Keddell-street, G. McGowatt, Keddell-street,. S. E. Richards, partially on Princes-street. The Secretary was instructed to give these parties notice to remove encroachment. ' Queen-street. —Mr Gudgeon drew attention to the state of the pathway in Queen-street, near the Roman Catholic Church, which was in a very bad state, and such as to prevent people from reaching that place of worship, except at much discomfort and inconvenience. It was resolved to do the work if private parties subscribed something.—Mr Graham said lie would give £l. Fire-rate Business.— lt was resolved to call for tenders here and in Auckland for making a hose-reel.—Mr Gudgeon stated that the Shortland Volunteer Brigade had agreed to work under the Graliamstown Brigade in the event of a lire in the latter locality, and the Grahamstowu Brigade would do the same by the Shortland Brigade in the event of a fire there. This would give them a force of about 50 men. He also understood that Mr Alexander (who had charge of the Fire Brigade) had used some rcry intemperate language to Mr Marks, the Volunteer Superintendent.— It was resolved that the Chairman, Mr Hazard, and Mr Gudgeon should make inquiry into the matter, and, if the statement was found to be correct, that Mr Alexander should he discharged, and another man appointed in his stead.

The Board then adjourned. At the close of the meeting the members, together with the Engineer and Secretary, visited the VVaiotahi Greek, and instructed the Engineer to estimate the cost, and report to next meeting, of laying down a culvert from the Caledonian Battery to Burke-street.
