MEETING OF KARAKA CREEK INHABITANTS.
A MODERATELY well attended meeting of the inhabitants of the above-named district took place at the Victoria Hotel last evening. Mr Wickham was called to the chair, and read the advertisement convening the meeting, and stated that a mistake had happened in the advertisement, the Digger’s Rest Hotel being substituted for that of the Victoria, and he thought that in all probability some persons had gone astray m consequence. Mr Cook stated that they had met for the purpose of considering the best steps to be taken for getting the present water supply extended to their immediate locality, and also for the formation of a road up the creek to Vickery’s machine. After a good deal of discussion, Mr Cook proposed “ That the inhabitants of the vicinity petition the Provincial Government for the extension of the water supply to or near the Victoria Hotel, and also for the continuation of the road up the creek, for the convenience of the leaseholders in that district.” Seconded by Mr Schofield and carried. A unanimous opinion was expressed by those present that they were justly and fairly entitled to have their demand complied with, as they were paying £2 per annum for holding the ground on which their dwellings were built. The following gentlemen were appointed a committee to draft a petition to send to the Provincial Executive, and to be signed by the inhabitants of the district : Messrs Wickham, Cook, Law, Binney, and Heavy. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
