THE LATE FIRE AT SHORTLAND.
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee appointed at a public meeting held ou Tuesday in reference to the late disastrous fire, took place at Butt’s Hotel, Shorthand, last night. Present—Air J. E. Alacdonald in the chair, and Messrs D. Grove, J. C. Young, R. Lloy'd-, Gibbons, Martinson, Crick, Nolan, C. Cox, Power, Alston, Burgess. Apologies for unavoidable absence were tendered from Air Lipsey and other members of the Kauaerauga Highway Board, and Mr Creagh. Mr J, C. Young was appointed Secretary.—The Chairman said that, inasmuch as there were some monies already subscribed, it would be well to appoint a Treasurer.—Air Cox was unani-
mously elected to this office. —The Secretary was instructed to have 100 subscription lists printed, together with circulars, to be sent amongst mining managers and others, requesting them to forward amounts collected for the benefit of the sufferers to the Treasurer.—Mr Nolan suggested that an active canvass should ho commenced at once, and that the members of committee should pair elf into districts and collect what they could from the inhabitants.—The Chairman thought there would be a little difficulty in carrying this into practical elfect, and that it would be better to let the whole committee go over lire whole district.—lt was resolved to divide the committee into
districts, as follows : Grey-street to Karaka - street, and Mackay-street to Kolleston-street: Messrs Macdonald, Lipscy, Cox, Heron, Garrett, Williams. Mackay-street, including Rolleston-street: Messrs Martinson, Mclllione, Phillips.— liape Creek to Bealeystreet : Messrs Glove, McCormick, Power. —Sealey-strcet to Karaka Creek, both sides: Messrs Nolan, Gibbons, Burgess, Hcutt. Grahamstown, Waiotahi, and Tararu : The Waiotahi Board, and Messrs j Renshaw, Spencer, Young, Lloyd, and | O’Halloran.—South of Hape Creek, and to I Grey-street : Parauai Board, and Messrs j Click and D. Stewart.—The Field : Mine ' managers and bank managers I It was resolved that the lists should be I returnable not later than the Ist August j next.—Mr Grove moved that a sub-com-mittee he formed to inquire into ami report at next meeting as to the wants of the sufferers, and in the meantime the committee be authorised to deal with urgent eases. The following were appointed a subcommittee : Messrs Lloyd, Gibbons, Burgess, Cox, Macdonald, Driver, and Crick (three to form a quorum).—lt was proposed by Mr Gibbons that the sum of £l2 be handed over to the Ladies’ Benevolent Society for immediate distribution .by them.—Mr Martinson seconded tlie proposition, which was carried.—Mr Burgess suggested that the public of Auckland should be appealed to on the matter,
and that the local amaieurs lu re might bo asked to give a tlieaTrical performance also that the clergy be asked to give tlie proceeds of a collection at their churches. —The Secretary was requested to forward to* tho bank managers, principal merchants, aud others in Audi.and subscription lists, aud to ask their co-operation in this matter. —It was resolved that the sub-committee meet again next day at 4 p.m., at Mr Young’s, ami the next general meeting on Tuesday* night, at Butt’s Hotel.—The name of Mr Mill was added to the General- Committee.—A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated tho proceedings.
