MINING.
Nonpareil. —Mr Goldsworthy is busy getting the mine into order for starting to work again and getting out stone. The boiler has been thoroughly cleaned out, and everything now works very smoothly and well. Two new and large tanks have been fixed, to hold the boiler supply of water, the two hitherto used being quite inadequate for the purpose. By the present means adopted they will be enabled to insure a constant supply of clean good water. The manager is now fixing passes in the low level blocks, and in the course of a week or so expects to be able to start crushing again. He lias not at present received instructions to repair the shaft in order to get two cages to work, but we should imagine that this would ho done at once, as two cages can be so much more economically worked than one. We hope soon to see this mine turning out some good returns.
Bendigo Independent. —The tributers of this company have let a contract for putting in a low level tunnel, according to the terms on which they hold the ground, and this tunnel is now iti for a distance of lift}' feet, and making good headway. A laige paddock of stone is on hand, and crushing will probably be commenced in about a fortnight, when a good return may be expected, as besides the general stuff there is a fine parcel of specimens in their box which will serve to materially increase the yield. Black Angel. —A meeting of directors was held yesterday morning, at which it was determined to procure an engine in order to enable them to proceed with the workings now going on. Two of the directors were instructed to purchase one, and this they lost no time about, but bought from Messrs Morrin the neat little stationary donkey engine which was in use at the Albion shaft for a time. This will be erected in a chamber to he cut out at the end of the main adit level, and will enable them to cope with the water, and also to raise their stone much more economically than they can do at present. The engine will he placed in position as soon as possible, and work resumed below, where a very favourable show can now be obtained.
Bank of New Zealand. —The tributers who took up a portion of this company’s mine have been hard at work «ver since, and so far with what promises to he satisfactory results. We reported a short time since that they had struck a good-looking leader, from which some nice-looking specimens were obtained. They have since been following this downwards with a winze, and it continues to yield most promising stone, of which there are ten or twelve tons in paddock, and more is being added day by day. An adit which was formerly opened below the Monarch main shaft, for the purpose of cutting the Multum in Pa v vo lode has been pushed in, and on Tuesday the wall of a lode was reached, which is supposed to be the one sought for. In this it has. been cut through, hut we have not yet learned with what results. Inverness. —The lode where it was stripped in the winze and slopes, was broken down yesterday, and gold was seen very f'eely through the stone which is evidently of good crushing quality, and may be expected to yield well when crushed. The rise which has been put up on the south side of the large slide lias reached the block of stone wished for, and a pass is now being constructed for the proper working of the reef. In a few days the manager will he in a position to state whether the run of gold does go in that direction, as is expected, or not.
Central Italy. The manager has commenced to open out in the shaft at one hundred and sixty-three feet from the surface. A chamber will lie constructed here, and the contractors will then proceed to meet the tunnel coming in from the Moanataiari Creek. By this means the progress of the work will be much more rapid, as driving will be going on from both sides. The tunnel is now in for a distance of three hundred and fifty feet, and is still one hundred and ten feet away from the shaft. In the upper level drive no lode has as yet been met with, but theie is every indication of one being near at hand, quartz stringers being very plentiful in the face, and gold can be seen in some of them.
Cure. —The crushing of the fifty tons at the Tramway Battery was completed, and retorting took place yesterday, giving a return of fifty-eight ounces ten pennyweights. This gives a total of about two hundred and eleven ounces from the one hundred and lil'ty-five tons crushed, being an average of just over twenty-seven pennyweights to the ton all round. Crushing has been resumed at Tararu, and will be kept up for some time to come. The reef looks, if anything, better than it did a few days back. The half-yearly meeting of the company takes place in Auckland to-day.
COROMANDEL MINING NEWS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Darkie’s Terrace : This Company have extended their level 150 feet, and expect shortly to cut the leader striking from the spur where they found good prospects. A lower leve' on the opposite side of the hill is also being driven, and several gold b ariug stringers carried with them a distance of 20 feet in. I saw some very good specimens said to have been taken from the lower drive. Morse’s Creek : In opening out for paddock a leader was cut bearing for Kapanga ground. A little gold was obtained. The main tunnel is in G 5 feet, and is being well timbered right through. Their object is to cut a known reef in the Driving Creek, also those traversing the Kapanga ground. Preece’s Point Company are following up the leader in a surface cutting and intend tracing it into the lull, when they inteud to open a level and ear.y it with them. Gold is seen in the stone all the the way tney have gone, and good prospects can be washed. The Golden Oyster (original I}' 1 }' Preece’s Point beach claim) are sinking a shaft on their boundary at high-water mark with the view of getting the underlie of the Preece’s Point reef. The shaft is now down 8 feet, and making a little water. Ravensiock : This Company are going on with their lower level, and intend carrying it on 15l) leet to their boundary. a survey was made last week, and the Trig Hill specimen leader traced tlaough their ground. The upper level is also to be extended, and ground thoroughly prospected,
The Trig Hill have their main lower level in 170 feet, and intend to continue it to cut the leader seen ou the surface. At 100 feet they ore opening out on a lode about 18 inches wide, which gave them good prospects when first struck. In the upper level the rise is being carried on, and quartz taken out. Gold is seen occasionally in the stone. A meeting of directors is about to be called to consider the advisability of having some of the stone to grass crushed. Scotty’s Hill: In consequence of the inconvenience of getting timber, thedriving on specimen leader has been suspended for a few days. In the meantime a drive is being opened out on their boundary to test a leader discovered by the manager of the Yon Tempsky on Friday last, and from which good prospects were obtained. The stone is very promising looking.
