PROXY HUNTERS.

To the Editor of the THAMES GUARDIAN'. Sir, —Canvassers are busy just now—and for their sakos I hope the trade is profitable—soliciting from bouse to house signatures to the Permissive Bill petition, and to proxies for the forthcoming Road Board elections. I can’t quite make out whether the present members arc coming out again or not, but I hear plenty of names mentioned of probable new candidates. Why don’t intending candidates 'announce themselves and let us know who are coming before the ratepayers promise their votes or proxies. 1 hear two new names mentioned as likely to try their luck at Waiotahi Mr Burke and Mr P. Griffin ; and for the Kauaeranga I have heard of all sorts of names, including Messrs Butt, Kilgour, Heron, Mcllhoue, and possibly another or two from Block 27. I have also heard the names of Mr W. Rowe and Mr E. i Thomas mentioned. As to Parawai, several of the present Board say they don’t intend to come out again, but I have heard no new names mentioned. Until the candidates are announced, I think these proNA hunters should not trouble the ratepayers. I don’t admire the system of voting by proxy at all, but in some cases, where an owner or occupier entitled to vote is unavoidably absent, it may be admissible. I would say to my friends the proxy hunters, stop dunning until we know who are coming forward. To my fellow ratepayers I would say, do not give your proxies or promises until the candidates are before you. It’s playing a game in the dark. -I am, &c\, A Ratepayer. Grahamstown, June 25, 1872.
