Wellington, 1.4 p.m. The Agent-General, according to information received by the San Francisco mail, had made arrangements for the despatch of 2,200 immigrants for New Zealand during the months of April and May. Of the total number, 1,400 will be British, 600 German, and 200 Scandinavian. The Germans will be sent in equal proportions to Otago and Canterbury, and the Scandinavians to Napier. A Washington telegram of the 20th says that the Postal Committee reported the Postal Appropriations Bill with amendments, doubling the China and Brazil steamships, services, and subsidies. The inquiry in re the compositors in the Government Printing Office takes place to-day. In the appeal Court to-day Smythies resumed his address. Travers was also heard on the other side, and J'mythies will be heard in reply to-morrow. Information has been received to the effect that the immigration colonists and corporation have ratified Colonel Fielding’s purchase of 100,000 acres of land in the Province of Wellington. Wanganui. The Queen’s Birthday festivities were a great success, and consisted ot a Volunteer review, regatta, races, and a ball. OTAGO. Dunedin. The Otago Provincial Government has refused its sanction to the endowment of hospitals, schools, and benevolent institution. The refusal causes considerable excitement. The Otago members of the Assembly are to consider the matter to-day (Monday), and it is also proposed to call a public meeting. An organised opposition to Reid’s Government has been formed, under the leadership of T. L. {Shepherd. Mr Brannigan has lost the use of his right side through a paralytic stroke, which happened on Saturday. A fire has taken place at the Club, but it was promptly extinguished before much damage was done. A caucus of the goldfields members has been held, at which it was determined to insist upon the re-construction of the Government. Invercargill. A fire took place on Sunday at Cross and McWilliams’ store in the township of Winton. The whole of the premises were completely destroyed, nothing being saved. They were insured in the Royal Insurance company for £750, but the place was valued at £1,300. WESTLAND. Hokitika. The s.s. Rangitoto has arrived from Melbourne. The Bar is rough, so that she cannot be tendered until to-morrow. The s.s. Omeo sailed for Melbourne at 3.30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. CANTERBURY. Christchurch. A document has been published in the Christchurch “ Star,” alleged to have been picked up on the Ocean Beach, near Dunedin, and apparently written on the leaf of a note-book in pencil, and placed in a wine bottle. It purports to have been written by the first mate of the Matoakn, and says that himself ttnd several able-seamen were in the. long-boat, south-west of New Guinea, the passengers being all lost.
