COROMANDEL RACES.
A VERY large number of persons witnessed the races, yesterday, and we should think that fully one-third of those present were from Auckland and the Thames. The Grand Stand was well filled, mostly by ladies, who attended in large numbers. Mr Trimble, late of the Oriental Hotel, Auckland, had his bar beneath the Grand Stsnd, and was, with other proprietors of booths, weU patronised. First Race. —Maiden Plate of 20 sov., for aU horses that had never won an advertised prize of 6 sov. or upwards; distance, IT miles ; weight for age. A very good start was effected, and after a good spin round the course, Mr Howe’s ch.g. Prophet came in the winner by nearly two lengths. Mr Snell’s Nero second ; and Mr Dunster’s Argyle, third. Second Race.— Queen’s B : rthday Grand Handicap of 40 sov., for a 1! horses handicapped by the stewards ; distance, 2Amiles; second horse to save distance fee ; five entries. Mr Hale’s Flying Jib won by a length, but was closely pushed by the others throughout the race ; Mr Howe’s Marquis second ; Mr Heath’s Ee'ipse, third. This event was generally acknowledged to be the best of the day. Third Race. —Handicap Hurdle Race of 25 sov. ; for all horses ; over 12 flights of hurdles. 3 teet 6 inches high; distance, 2£ ui’lfjs ; entrance, 2 sov. This was a very poor affair from the time of starting, and was won easily by Mr Dunster’s l>.g. Argyle. The others were now where. Fourth Race. —Pony Race for 10 sov.; for all ponies 14 hands high ; distance, 1£ miles; entrance, 1 sov.; post entry, catch weights. For this race there were five entries. A very good start was effected, Tit coming in winner, and Jack second.
