The Admiralty purpose adding three gun-vessels to the Australian Squadron, in order to suppress the labour trade. The import markets open to-day with less inquiry than there was during last week. Holders evince great firmness, as they know that present stocks cannot be replaced at a considerably increased cost. Sales of broadstuffs were light; Sydney mills, in bakers’ lots at £ls, and Adelaide 6orts up to £l6. Wheat quiet; a shipment of New Zealand, offered at auction by Messrs Stubbs and Co., was bought in at 6s 3d. There is more inquiry for Patna rice ; holders ask £22 10s to £23 for trade quantities. Sugars are improving, and business was done at prices showing increased firmness. The New Government.— Mr Parkes has completed the task entrusted to him by bis Excellency the Administrator of the Government. George Kirk has been fined, at the instance of the Acclimatisation Society, for shooting three pheasants. Pheasants arc now getting plentiful in certain parts of the colony. . White sugars are much sought after. A common grey Java sold at ,£39 10s to £39 15s, 28s above the price expected. 195 hogsheads and quarters of Otard’s were auctioned at 5s 6£d. Teas are moving steadily. Hennessy’s ease hrandy, 26s 9.1 ; 7, 1 *OO bushels malting barley, 6s to 7s ; candles, llid ; Burke’s stout freely sold at 10s 6 I. Arrived : City of Adelaide (s.).

SOUTH AUSTRALIA. May 11. Wheat. 6s ; Flour, £l3 10s to £l4 10s ; little doing. May 13. Arrived—lnverary, with 8,000 eases kerosene. New Zealand wheat, prime, sold at 5s 10d ; bran, llfd ; flour nnchang d. One line, of Itiverary’s kerosene was sold to-day, but the price is with-held ; wheat is quiet at 6s: flour, £l3 10s to £l4 10s. May 14. The Government, to-day, received a t'degram from Mr Patterson, stating that the overland telegraph has been delayed bv unprecedented wet, but that operations will be resumed at the beginning of Anril. There is still a gap of 250 miles. When it is reduced to 150, a horse express will be established. It is expected that this will be accomplished in August. There has been great mortality amongst Horses—and acting, rheumatism, and fever among men. Two, named Edward Powell and Thomas Hawkins, died. Everything possible has been done to push the work forward. Dr Reumer has been sent to relieve those who are sick. Wheat. 6s; flour unaltered; market quiet.

Numbers of leases are being taken up, and preparations making for the formation of companies. Hay, May'll. About half-past 6. this morning, a fire broke out in the Billiard-room of the Caledonian Hotel ; the kitchen, bedrooms, billiard-room, and other parts of the buildings were burnt to the ground. A large quantity of furniture was destroyed. The loss is about £SOO. The goods in Warhy’s and also in Morris’s stores were hurried into the street ; some damage was done by its removal. The lire is now subdued. The townspeople assisted nobly in saving property and extinguishing the fire. Grafton, May 11. The Solferino reefs are still attracting great attention. A new reef has been opened at the Little River diggings, reported to be the richest yet discovered on the Clarence. The Clarence (s.) arrived to-night with some fifty passengers, principally diggers. Carcoar, May 13. The Escort takes 1,4570 z. gold, 844 of which are from the Junction, and 175 from Brown’s Creek. Hay, May 13. An inquest was held to-day on the late fire. The verdict is—that the fire was the result of accident. The damage to stock and furniture in the Caledonian Hotel is very great; the amount, however, is not yet ascertained. Mudgee, May 13. There is a rush to-day to Uooyal, two miles from Mudgee. The prospectors’ claims are good. The Commissnoner will, in a day or two, decide whether the field is to he worked on the frontage or on the block system. There are indications of a great alluvial field. Maitland. May 14. Mr O’Donohue, storekeeper, of Lochinvar, was, last night, thrown from his horse at Rutherford, and killed. Brisbane, May 14. The Legislative Council is still discussing the question of supply, and tin re is no sign of compromise or change. A deputation, consisting of leading members of the Opposition, waited on the Governor this morning with a long memorial, the purport of whcdi was to show that the Opposition were justified in the course they have taken to compel a consideration of the Redistribution of Electorates Bill before granting supply for the whole year; and that any inconvenience which may arise from a dead-lock will lie due to the unreasonable demands of Mr Palmer.
