VOLUNTEERING.

THE BAND COMMITTEE MEETING. The final meeting of the delegates or representatives elected by the six companies constituting the Rifle Battalion was held last evening at No. 3 Drill-shed. There were present Captain Goldsmith, and ColorSergeant Cleary, Engineers; Captain Lipsey, Lieutenant Lechner, and Color-Ser-geant Noonan, No. 1 Royals; Sergeant Scott, No. 2 H R.V.; Lieutenant Macdonald, No. 3 H.R.V.; Captain Williams, Lieutenant Rae, and Secretary Stidolph, Thames Rifle Rangers. There were no representatives from the Scottish Company, but, at the last meeting of the committee, Lieutenant Robertson intimated that the Scottisli Company would pav its proportion of the Maintenance Fund through the three officers commanding. The minutes of the last preliminary meeting were read, and a discussion took place as to the proceedings, and Sergeant Scott proposed, “That it is desirahle to have a Volunteer Band for the Rifle Battalion.” The motion was seconded by Captain Lifsky, '

Mr Macdonald stated that he had received a letter from Mr Morris, in answer to Id's getting the baud together for Queen’s birthday, and it was to the effect that the meinbeis of the Band had hod a meeting on Saturday night, at Which it was agreed that if M r Morris was perm a? nently engaged as bandmaster, the performance on the Queen’s birthday would form part of his engagement; but, if not, £l2 would be charged for the day’s performance. The letter was ultimately left for the Executive Committee to deal with. Captain Lipsey proposed that each company should subscribe £l2 a year for the maintenance of the band, such afnount to he answerable for by the officers commanding companies. The motion was seconded by ColourSergeant Cleary, and.carried. After other preliminary matters were settled, it was proposed, on the motion of Cifptain Goldsmith, seconded by Captain Lipsey, that the salary of the bandmaster should not exceed £IOO per year, music, &c\, found out of that amount. The motion was agreed to. *

Other details were dispensed with, and the following gentlemen elected an Executive Committee—one representative from each company :—Captain Goldsmith. Engineers ; Captain Lipsey, Royals; Lieut. Hazard, No. 2 H.R.V.; Lieut. Mawdona’ri, No. 3 H.R.V. ; Captain Williams, T.R.R. ; and the Scottish Company’s representative was left to themselves to settle. Lieut. Lech tier was elected secretary to the Executive Committee. The treasurer and president will he elected at a meeting to he held this evening at the Bendigo Hotel.

It was agreed to assent to Mr Morris’s proposition as to the Queen’s Birthday performance, i.e., to pay £l2 if lie be not appointed bandmaster. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the labours of this committee.

At a preliminary meeting of the Executive Committee held after the above, and at which Morris was present, he stated that he should require £IOO per year if engaged as bandmaster, and would find all the music, &c. Mr Morris was told that his letter had been received and entertained, and that the appointment of a bandmaster would be a matter to he settled at the meeting this evening, so that we are sure to have a band on the 24th, aind through the energetic manner in which the matter has been worked by the gentlemen concerned ; and as for the appointment of a bandmaster, Mr Morris appears to be thought very favourably of, and we think he deserves it for the very efficient manner in which he lias brought the band to its excellent state of proficiency. parades. The Naval Artillery squad were drilled last evening by Sub-Lieut. Bruce, at the big guns. The men are very smart in their actions. The Engineers will muster this evening, at Fraser and Tinne’s foundry building at the usual time. The T.R.R. Cadet Corps will muster at the Thames School at the usual hour.
