TE KOOTI IN THE WAIKATO.

Intelligence was received in town yesterday to the effect that Te Kooti has at length succeeded in reaching Waikato, having entered the Hangatiki district. He has long been endeavouring to reach the King’s quarters to claim protection, but was so closely watched and persistently pursued that until lately he was unable to effect his purpose. His having reached the King’s quarters, however, need cause no alarm, as he has lost his prestige, and is attended by only four or live followers, who must have been taught a severe lesson during the past two years. The pursuit of this fugitive, although long anil arduous, has not been fruitless. With such a band as that which gathered round the scoundrel in tne outset of his career, it is impossible to say what atrocities he might not have perpetrated unless he had been checked, and if success had attended his course no doubt many dissatisfied natives would have enrolled themselves under him. But everywhere he has been beaten, his followers 'killed, and himself subject to inawy narrow escapes. No doubt his sufferings will have awakened commisseration amongst the Kingites, who will probably decline to give him up ;' but he is not likely to cause further trouble, and the example which has been set by the Government in punishing his misdeeds, together with the execution of Keren pa, will no doubt haveabeneficial influence upon other natives who may be tempted to follow in Te Kooti’s footsteps by committing murderous attacks on outsettlemeuts.—Cross.
