THE ALLEGED CASE OF SMUGGLING AT POVERTY BAY.

By the arrival of the schooner Tawera we learn that whilst the schooner ‘Meteor’ was lying at Poverty Bay she was seized by the Government revenue cutter ‘ Ringleader,’ and the captain (11. Trimmer) and the cook of the vessel, William Salmon, were taken in charge on suspicion of smuggling. On the 29th ult. both men were brought up at the Court there, and charged. After a portion of the evidence had been taken the case was further re manded. Next day the schooner was allowed to sail, in charge, we understand, of a passenger (a mariner), for Waiapu, for which place she had on board a quantity of timber to build the Government schools. From Waiapu she was to return to Poverty Bay. On Wednesday last the ‘ Meteor' was seen lying at Waiapu discharging. The cutter ‘Ringleader’ was lying at Poverty Bay when the ‘Tawera’ left. Several other men have been arrested on suspicion of being implicated in the alleged breac-h-of the Customs regulations. A few days back we published telegrams which stated that Green, the ringleader of the band, had been fined £IOO. — D.S. Cross.
