GOLD IN THE WAIKATO.

Yesterday’s New Zealand Herald says, Our readers will recollect that we were the first to inform fhe public that native chiefs in the Taupo district bad written to the Superintendent, asking him to send up prospectors, and that they would provide for them on their arrival. We subsequently informed them of the receipt of the letter, and of the appointment of Messrs. Barry and Nolan, by the Superintendent. Since then, his Honor has received another letter from Pohipi, and a number of chiefs and influential natives in the same district, who did not join in the previous letter. This communication says : “My closing up of Taupo is ended. It is thrown open for goldmining. My heart has entirely consented to that work.” It then goes on to request the Superintendent to send up Europeans to work the ground ; in other words, it asks His Honor to send up competent prospectors. As these have already been sent, in compliance with the first request, it will only be necessary to write to them and inform them of the fact. We have thus additional evidence of the good feelings of the natives ; and we trust that Europeans will patiently wait the progress of events. The mining pop lation may rely upon it that the authorities will do their utmost to encourage the natives in their present course of action, but everything must proceed from the Maoris.
