THAMES MECHANICS’ INSTITUTE DEBATING SOCIETY.
Notwithstanding tlie inclemency of the weather, the above Society 7 held its usual fortnightly meeting, in the large room of tlie Institute, last evening, Mr E. W. Hollis (President) in the chair. There was a fair muster of members, and many 7 visitors (some being ladies) were present. Mr Carpenter opened the debate, “ Is a vegetable or mixed diet the most natural for the sustenance and development of man ?” taking the former view of the question, and was replied to by Mr Perrier, who ably argued the latter opinion. Mr Gray followed in support of Mr Perrier, and the debate was ‘then adjourned for future discussion. It was announced that the next evening would be devoted to readings and recitations by members of the class, to which subscribers to the Institute and their friends would be invited.
