THE ACCIDENT RELIEF FUND.

To the Editor of the THAMES GUARDIAN. Sir, —I am very glad to hear that the Thames Miners’ Accident Relief Fund promises to he a decided succass, despite of some attempted opposition on the part of those who think—erroneously, as I believe —that it will injure the Hospital and Friendly Societies. Now, sir, I believe it will not at all interfere with any of these institutions. Tho Hospital is an excellent one, and I sho.uld he truly sorry to see it in any other than a most flourishing condition ; but it does not meet every case. It can do nothing for the wife and children of a man killed or seriously injured by accident, and there are manj* who object to joining any secret societies ; moreover, those|societies will not take as members people of advanced age or feeble constitution, who are as liable to accident as anybody else, if not more so. I hope, at the meeting at the Governor Bowen Hotel this evening, that there will be a large attendance, especially of mine managers, who have not attended quite so numerously as they might have done. I have seen how well the Accident Relief Fund works in Victoria, and I do not sec why it should not do so here, and he looked upon as an auxiliary rather than a hindrance to other charitable institutions. You, sir, deserve the thanks of the mining community for the interest you have taken in the matter, and the prominence you have given it in your columns ; and, thanking you Heartily for what you have done, and trusting that the Fund will continue to prosper, —I am, sir, &c., An Old Resident of Victroia.
