The annual meeting of Justices for granting publican’s licenses, and also wholesale licenses for the sale of fermented and spirituous I’qnors for tins district was held yesterday. A report will be found in another place, by which it will be seen that by far the greater number of licenses were granted, Some were postponed for a month, but none were absolutely refused. There will be a sitting of the Warden's Court this morruug, when the Pnkehinau care —Kelly v. Kidd—will be proceeded with. There arc some other cases set down for hearing to-day, but there is not much probabi'ity that they will be reached. We would call attention to the fact that a full rehearsal will take place to-night at the Academy of Music for the Philharmonic Society’s Concert to be held to-morrow. The programme appears iu our advertising columns, and we have no hesitation in saying that it w’ll be a decided success, judging by those who are to perform, and the songs and glees to be sung. We perceive that the authorities have lost no time in carrying the water down Queenstreet to Coehrsme-stvect, the pipes being already laid across the road and the drain dug the greater part of the way down. The Mechanics’ Institute is to be supplied with water free of charge, and Mr Millett has caused a pipe to be laid down into the allotment. Tenders are, we perceive, being called for the construction of a track from the beach up the burn Creek to the Celt Machine site. The track is to be suitable for sleighs, and will enable the cla'TS iu this far off district to get machinery ..cut up. The line has been surveyed, and shows that the road will have a gradient of 1 in JO throughout. It will cross the bed of the creek some 25 tunes, but only one bildge will be necessary the whole way up. The road is the very best that could be obtained, and will, wc feel sure, be a great boon to the claims at the head of the creek, from some of which such good prospect have been obtained.

At the Police Court, yesterday, the business consisted of the imposition of the customary penalties on tln-ee persons charged ■with drunkenness.

There was a sitting of the R. M. Court at Shorthand yesterday to try an '"'iterpleadcr action, Lawson v. Paynes, as to the right of certain goods, but, in consequence of an informality in the r'.lidavit, the claim was withdrawn.

At Ohincmuii, on the Ist of May, a race meetiug is to be held. We are informed that a good sum has been collected for the occasion, and some fvst-ratc o 1 ruti. pated. The course will he very much improved, and a large number of horses arc expected to compete. They had intended to hold the meeting on St. George's Day, but it would interfere with the sitting of the Lands Court. A programme of the events will be published in a few days. The anniversary soGce of the Grahamstown Wesleyan Method ; st Church takes place to-night, at the Home Institute, and a meeting will afterwards be held in the church, at which several addresses will be made by ministers and L lends of the Church. We trust that the weather will be favourable, as great preparations have been made by a large number of the ladies of the congregation. and the so s rcc is expected to be very numerously attended. A rehearsal for the forthcoming performance of Eob Poy was held last night at the Mechanics’ Institute, and it was then arranged that the next one slmli take place on Tuesday cveivng next,at 7 p.m., at the same place, when all are particularly requested to attend. Some Maoris going up the river on Thursday last hailed Mr Field, who was coming down the river bank, and told him Mr Monro had been murdered by Topi.a Turoa. On reaching town Mr Field made inquiries, and found that Mr Monro had been threatened With murder by Topia, and not actually murdered as the natives had informed him. It seems Mr Monro is cugaged in surveying a large block of land which Mr J. Puller has, or is about to lease from the Maoris up the river some considerable distance, and that some dispute between the owners of the laud and Topia as to the boundary led to the former illusing a woman belonging to Topic’s liapu, who was pulling up pegs and otherwise obliterating the work. This led to Topia threatening to murder Mr Monro if he proceeded further with the work referred to. Truly a licensed surveyor under the Native Lauds Act lias a pleasant time of it, and must extract great comfort from the thought, that whilst he is taking a sight within the theodolite some offended native may have him covered with a Government rifle.— Wn nga 1111 i ('/1 ron iclc. The Civil Sittings of the Supreme Court will terminate to-day. Next Monday is set down for the hearing of matrimonial and divorce causes. — Cross. During the nast quarter upwards of 118 tons of putrid and unwholesome lish were seized by the officer of the Fishmongers’ Company in Billingsgate and Columbia markets, and destroyed as unlit for human food. Of this large quantity, 113 tons came from the former market, and nearly all of it was brought by rr II into the metropolis.
