VOLUNTEERING.

A very largely attended meeting of the Naval Brigade was held last night at the Academy of Music for the transaction of business. Captain Best sent in the following letter tendering bis resignation, as owing to the duties be was called on to perform in his capacity as a Government official be found Himself unable to attend faithfully to bis duties ns Volunteer officer: “ Grahamstown, April 16, 1872. “ Members of Thames Naval Brigade. “Gentlemen, —I herewith tender my resignation as Captain Commanding the above corps, and in doing so beg to state that, although I have left your ranks, I shall always feel great pleasure in forwarding the interes s of the company. —I have the honour to remain, your obedient servant, “ George A. Best, “ Captain Commanding.” After the resignation had been accepted the following testimonial was drawn up and s'gned by aff the officers of the company, and the other members present, to the number of over 40 : Thames Naval Brigade, April 16,1872. To Captain Best, Commanding Thames Naval Brigade. We, the undersigned officers and members, having heard that you intend resigning the command of the Brigade, on account of Government duties, hereby tender our sincere thanks for the interest you have always evinced towards us as members of the Brigade, and also for the high state of efficiency that the Brigade ha 3 acquired under your command. (Signed) G. W. Baseley, Ist Lieut. A. Bruce, 2nd Lieut. W. J. Stanger, Paymaster. J. J. Jackson, Secretary. And over 40 petty officers aucl seamen. A resolution was proposed and unanimously agreed to, that Captain Best should he made an honorary member of the Thames Naval Brigade for life.
