DROWNING AT NORTHERN WAIROA.
Ox the sth April last, an inquest was held at Mangawhare on the body of Robert Holroyd, a bushman, who was drowned in the Wairoa river on the 2Gth March. The deceased and three others had been drinking on that day at Mangawhare, and all left in a boat after dark. Wliep a little distance off shore, Robert Holroyd grappled Philip Butler, and both fell overboard. Philip Butler was dragged out by his hair, but Robert Holroyd could not be found. The Maoris found the body nine days afterwards floating in the river, but £2 10s in gold, which his mates said he had on his person at the time of the accident, could not be found at the inquest. The absence of his mates after the accident gave rise to some suspicions, but they all came down from the distant bush in which they had been working to give their evidence at the inquest. A verdict of “ Accidentally drowned while in a state of intoxication ” was returned. —He raid.
