MR SEVERN’S LECTURE.

Mr 11. A. Severn delivered the second of

liis interesting series of experimental lectures on scientific subjects, at tlic Academy of Music, last evening. There was a most appreciative and attentive, though rather small, audience. The sub:ic

of the evening’s lecture was “ Terres, rial magnetism, polarity, the needle, nariners’ compass, variation.” The subect was illustrated by experiments clearly leinonstrating the remarkable facts in connection with these valuable and scientific topics. The native angles, circles, axis of the earth, the heat of the sun, the poles, repulsion and attraction, induction of iron, &c. The use of the compass, the variation, regular, irregular, and local, occurring on hoard ship, and a variety of kindred subjects, were very skilfuily handled, and so explained as to be rpiile intelligible to the non-scientific mind, as well as to the practical man of science. To the young, these lectures are most instructive, and many children of a larger growth may listen with pleasure and profit to such an entertainment, so eminently of practical use, and illustrative of the wisdom of the Great Creator of the Universe, and of the sublimity of bis designs. We hope to see a larger attendance at Mr Severn’s next lecture, for lie is really worth listening to. The proceeds last night were devoted to the formation of a Museum in connection with the Thames Mechanics’ Institute, a most laudable object, and one deserving of all the support which can be afforded to it.
