THE RACES.

Yesterday’s races were a great success, the weather being everything that could be desired. From an early hour crowds were wending theiuxvay out to the course on foot and in the ’busses, all of which seemed to be fully employed all day. Tiie first race started punctually at 12.30 for the Maiden Plate, of 10 sovs.; one and a half mile; weight for age; 7 entries, G ran.

Twice round, three times to pass tin winning post. The Maori keenness misunderstood this, and after finishing tin race made a stand, asked a few hasty questions and scampered off again, to tingreat amusement of all, they being under the impression that it was to be three times round. The second race was the Parawai Plate of 30 sovs.; weight for age, &c. Six entered, six ran.

A pretty race this was between Marquis and Ruby, the two changing their positions alternately and very regularly three or four times.

This was a splendid race, and well contested throughout. Dan O’Connell started with the lead, hut kept gradually losing ground up to the second time round the course, when Minnie Athol headed him, with Marquis well up, gaining ground well, and at the finish lie came with a rush, winning by a neck. Ladies Purse—Pony Race, for purse of 10 sows.; second horse, £2 10s ; 14 miles, for ponies of 14 hands high and under ; catch weights. Entrance, 10s, to go to the fund. Dnnnybrook, G G, M. Dnnnybrook made a rush and bolted to tin- Rob Roy Hotel the first time ro"nd, and defied all attempts made to bring him back to the course. This destroyed his chance of the race, which was a good one, and he unfortunately hurt a child who was in the way and was run over. Consolation Btnkc of 10 sovs. ; socon ( * horse, £2 10s ; 2 miles ; handicap ; fo’’ all beaten horses that have run at the meeting. Entrance, ss, to go to the fund. There were five entries for this, and they all came to the post. The following were the handicaps :

This was won rather easily by Ruby ; Sultan close up ; the rest nowhere. A hoy named French, we are sorry to state, met with rather a serious accident immediately after the pony race. While the Clerk of the Course was clearing for the consolation race he was knocked down and the horse trod upon him in the abdomen He was at once conveyed to the Hospital, by the order of the committee. We saw him at the Hospital at 7.30 p.m., and he was doing very wi 11, and it is hoped his injuries will he right in a few days. To the stewards and hon. sec.,MrOldrey, may he due the successful organisation and termination of these races : and as we before predicted, the leaving of the whole matter in the hands of these gentlemen made the affair a success.
