MINING.
Caledonian. —The report that gold hail been found in the Caledonian ntine on Friday night was quite correct. A specimen was taken from (he drive going in on the lode at the main level towards the N.E. or Otago end. Nothing more was seen afterwards, and the lode is here from nine inches to a foot wide. We have this week to chronicle the poorest return from the mine that has taken place since first they got on (o the gold, only 50oz. being to hand from their own battery, and 520 z. from Tararu, or a total of 102 oz. of retorted gold. Golden Crown TriWte. —The tribufers
! of this company have lately come cm to a i nice patch of gold in their workings. The j rich slone was taken from the small leader [ in the footwall of the No. 1 lode, on j which they are working. Their return | for the fortnight mounted lip to the respectable total of 2890 z. Idwt. of j melted gold, a large portion of which was from the specimens obtained. | CoLtL’AN.—A lodgment of 130 oz. of retorted gold was made on behalf of this company on Saturday. This is the partial result of the crushing at Clarkson’s battery, and will be further increased when tho whole lot is cleaned up. Junction Tribute. —The result of the crushing for Goldsworthy’s tribute party at the Herald Battery is (19oz. lodwt. of melted gold. The general stuif by itself was not very good, but a parcel oil specimens picked out brought the whole return up to a very good one. Moanataiaiii. The last fortnight's yield is the best we have had to chronicle yet, amounting as it does to 7500 z. of gold. About ti e same quantity of general stone as usual was crushed, and there was a fine parcel of p'.-ked stuff, which yielded heavily. The company’s stock was in goiddenand Saturday, and were quoted at a much higher rate than they have j been for some tm ■ hack. There is every I reason to believ • that this company wiil | soon he in a | odtion to declare a divi- ! dend, as their returns for the past f. w ' months have I cen very good indeed, and I there is every prospect of their increasing I as soon as ti.e toug-wished-for Kuranui j tunnel is in communication with their ol.b r world g-. Kuranui. —This company’s usual fort- | nig tly return is to hand, but nv are sorry J to have to state that it is a vurv poor one j indeed, amminting only to 108 oz. of gold | from about the average quantity of stone crushed. * i
Tuokkv Company Tributes.— Lowe and [>ariy have finished a crushing of about of) tons of stone at the Manukau Battery, with a return of 440 z. of retorted gold. Smith and party have also finished a parcel of stone at tho same batterv, which yielded 13oz. of retorted gold. Beehive Tribute. —The crushing of a small parrad of stone for these tributers at the Criti rion Battery has given a return of lOoz. 7dwt. of melted gold. \Ye have not been able to ascertain the exact quantity crushed, but the return is a payable one.
Cent;.—The report that gold had been obtained again in ibis reef is perfectly true, and is so far satisfactory that, it proves that the patch is oatending. They have been since last crushing, and are still, engaged in doing a lot of dead work, as far as they themselves are concerned. Part of their agreement with the Manuk,an people was that they should break down the reef from the end of the Mannkau workings to the boundary' of the two claims and secure the ground, and this they are now doing. Where the gold was found was, we understand, on the left hand side of the cross-cut from which the stone lately crushed was taken, that is on the Cure side of it, and the lode looks, we arc informed, very promising imbed. Alijiox.—They kavc been a good deal troubled with water in the shaft for the last day or so on account, we take it, of the Imperial Crown pinups being stopped for some little repairs. Hitherto they have been very free of water indeed, which can now be seen was elfeeted by the Imperial Crown pumps draining them. COROMA X 1) E L . There is very little change in the character of the Tokatca stone ; it still continues of good quality. Negotiations are, we believe, going on for the purchase of Tookcy’s battery (the Whakaroa), when, doubtless, crushing will begin again with renewed energy. The Bismarck and the Siege of Paris are working vigorously. There is a very large quantity of stone in the paddocks of these claims, and the shareholders anxiously await the erection of Mr Bennett's battery on the Ilaraiaonga Creek. The Green Flag are sinking a shaft to cut the Goleonda leader. This claim is rising in value from its position next to the favourite.
