MINING.
Central Italy. —The lode cut into on Tuesday has been broken through from
side to side of the drive, and proves to be well-defined and highly auriferous. On one side the lode is as much as three feet wide? whilst on the other it is much smaller, but will, no doubt, increase in size as it is diiven on. The gold which is seen in the stone is of a coarse nature, and seems pretty well distributed throughout. Shares weic in good demand yesterday morning, and rose to as high as £3 7s (id, but cased off again during the afternoon. It will not be long now ere the company will be able to have their first crushing, as they intend to commence opening out at once on the lode, ami theie seems every probability of boili this mine and its neighbour, the Golden Calf, being good gold producers.
Queen ok the May.—At about 10 feet from the shaft the lode sought has been found. It lias been gone through and proves to ho about ?l'l. Gin. in width, though it is nipped a little on one side. There is no doubt as to its being the City of London lode, its whole appearance being similar, as arc also the dip and strike. It is of course a mullocky reef, and fair dish prospects have been washed from ii, and a few small specimens found. This reef bids fair to he ranked among the best on the field, as it has shown good prospects wherever opened up from the Blight Smile right through to the Queen of the May. The Queen of the Thames ought now to go in and commence work, as the lode strikes right for the northern end of their ground, and dips into it. In fact, there is but 1 iitie doubt but that they have now a fine chance of having a large portion of it in their ground. Caledonian. The pumps have been hard at work, and have broken, the water having sucked twice since they started it. Tookcy’s people will commence to sink immediately, and the manager of the Caledonian is now quite confident that when they are a little deeper, so as to divide the weight of water between the two, that lie will he able to go on down to the required deptli with ease. Lowland Lass. —The manager informs us that arrangements have been made to have a scries of trial crushings from several reefs which were cut iu the lowlevel tunnel, these trials to take place at the Vulcan Battery. Two of the reefs referred to above proved payable when tested some time since, and are expected to turn out well. Criterion Battery.— This battery is now engaged crushing for the Nonpareil, Waitemata, and Beehive mines, and the 1 Great Surprise are sending down a parcel to the battery to be put through as soon as the stampers arc vacant. A parcel of 15<»z. Udwl. of gold from the Nil Desperandum, Coromandel, was 1 lodged yesterday in the Bank of New Zealand ; and also 'Joy. ldwt, the result of a crushing of a small parcel from the Hercules.
Wc were informed last night that a plaint has been laid in the Warden’s Court at Coromandel, against the present proprietors of the Two Geoiges claim which, it was generally understood, had been purchased by the Pride of Tokatea Goldmining Company. What the nature of the plaint is we cannot say ; but wc hear that something is wrong, and lawyers have been retained, so that from appearances a law suit is coming, and when once that commences, goodness only* knows when it. will end.
