THE Thames Guardian AND MINING RECORD. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1872.

The English news received via, Suez, yesterday, contains apparently but little of importance. The Prince of Wales is quite restored to health, an event which will he a subject of congratulation to the majority of British subjects in all parts of the world. The Chief Secretary for Ireland advocates firmness in repressing rebellion, and extended education, as being most conducive to the welfare of the country. A treaty ceding African Guinea has been adopted. The extraordinary Tichbornc case is still going on, and the Attorney-

General has opened the ball on the part of the defendant. He is said to have stigmatized the claimant’s knowledge of circumstances as showing only the depth of his wickedness, and throws ridicule on the story of the wreck. He also contends that the real .Sir Roger was an accomplished gentleman, which it is conceded the present claimant is not. The claimant, however, has undoubtedly made out a strong case, which it will require a considerable weight of testimony to upset. It is impossible, however, to say on which side the verdict is likely to be until the whole of the evidence has been produced. It appears to us not improbable that the jury will not agree, and in that case, the whole of the time, trouble, and expense involved in this celebrated action will go for nothing, provided, of course, that the cost of a new trial can he borne otherwise. It seems a sort of anomaly in the English Law that there is no tribunal to try a question of title to a Baronetcy as there is of a Peer, hut that such a question lias to be decided by the clumsy process of an action for ejectment against a tenant on the property. The King of Italy has retired temporarily to Florence, because, as the telegram states, “ the Pope refuses any compromise with the Government.”
