VOLUNTEERING.

COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING. The Colonial Prize Firing is fixed to take place at Christchurch on April 2. and the two succeeding days. The following are qualified to compete ; those having an asterisk or an x before their names are Government representatives : —•

—Nelson, ns a province, Oauiaru, Timaru, Tokomairiro, Clutha, Hampden, Wnikonaiti, Temuka, and Invercargill, as districts failed to return representatives. In Auckland over forty qualified to shoot in the the first stage ; and out of ten who fired in the second Captain Morrow barely got through. No returns have been received from Marlborough or Taranaki. Napier has only returned one man, Ensign Close, who made 45 points. Re.uonf, a representative since 1808, failed to make the necessary number of points at each of the other stages. The Wellington Volunteers are subscribing to send good shots, who were disqualified by the Government conditions, to the Christchurch competition. —Dunedin Star. THE THAMES CHALLENGE. A UEF.Tixi; of Volunteers interested in the challenge from the Thames Volunteers, was held in the Drill-shed, Princcs-strcet, last evening, to hear the report of the committee appointed at the last meeting. Captain Johnston (No. 2 Navnls) was voted to the chair. The minutes of the

las_t meeting were read and confirmed. "The secretary then read the report. The committee said that before they could accept the challenge they must have £GS. secretary had sent circulars to seventeen companies, and they bad received answers to eight only. The total sum subscribed was £3B 10s, thus leaving the sum of £27 to be made up. With this sum against tHem, the committee could not accept the challenge. The report was then adopted. A letter from the Hobson Company, declining to guarantee any sum towards the match, was then read. Also a letter from the secretary of the Thames committee, saying that the Thames Volunntccrs were surprised at the tardiness of the Auckland Volunteers in accepting the challenge. It was resolved to send subscription lists to each of the companies, one to the captain, and the other to an energetic member of the said corps, and that the list he requested to he sent to the secretary by Thursday next. Captain Lundon, of the Onchuiiga Rifle Company, then came forward, and, on behalf of himself and officers, guaranteed £4. A vote of thanks was then proposed, seconded, and carried to the chairman, also to Captain Lundon.
