SERIOUS ACCIDENT.
An accident, which might have been attended with fatal consequences, took place in the Golden Calf and Central Italy main adit tunnel last evening, at abuit half-past 7 o’clock. Whilst two men, William Guthrie and William Gihlett, the former of whom is a director in the Central Italy Company, were tamping a shot it exploded, injuring both seriously, Gihlett having tiie third linger of the right hand broken, and also being severely injured about the lower part of the abdomen and thighs, having been struck by a heavy lump of stone. With the exception of one arm, he is not powder burnt. Guthrie is very severely burnt lip to both elbows, besides having two ugly cuts, one on each hand ; he having hold of the tamping rod, received the full force of the powder, flow the accident happened, they are at a loss to account, as they were using a newly-coppered tamping bar at the time Luckily, both men were able to walk down to Grahamstow.i, as no one else was working with them. Their wounds were attended to by Mr Sarnies, after wliicb they were botli taken to the Hospital in a cab.
